Stockholm is making considerable progress in building a clean and environmentally friendly transport network. For example, most regional water transport uses renewable fuels and hopes to become fully electric by 2030.

Zero Emission Zones

Stockholm plans to establish two free zones by 2026, one in the Old Town and another in the city. In these areas, only non-air-powered vehicles will be allowed to drive.

As part of this plan, the city will study the possibility of organizing parking spaces and costs to promote other car routes. For example, it could charge different prices based on environmental performance or reserve space for high-end vehicles, such as car-sharing services.

Electric Charging Infrastructure

If Stockholm’s city center roads are to be empty by 2030, electric vehicles (EVs) are crucial. Currently, more than a fifth of all cars in Stockholm are charging, most of which are hybrids.

To speed up this sustainable transition, Stockholm signed an electricity agreement with 63 other companies, a broad partnership that brings together different people, from the owners of the electricity network to property, land, vehicles, and equipment providers.

Integrated Shared Mobility Services

Mobility and sharing services can encourage people to use public transport. Bike and electric scooter rentals are already more sustainable forms of transportation than private cars.

However, integrating these services into a public transport network can also act as a feed network for high-capacity, even green public transport, improving everyone’s chances.

Moreover, e-scooter technology is among the fastest-growing urban mobility solutions. For instance, Flash Motors Infinity X can reach speeds of 75 mph and a range of 70 miles.

Stockholm hopes to achieve this by creating a regional mobility network that works in partnership with private mobility companies.

Green Freight and Delivery Transport

Road transport is not just passenger transport. Shipping, freight, and postal services make more trips, often using heavier vehicles. To address this, the city will encourage the move to off-peak transport stations.

The city will ensure that fast charging stations are installed in the necessary locations as part of this plan. The same goes for heavy-lifting machines. Although cargo bikes require a dedicated loading/unloading area, they require very little parking space, and their small size makes them accessible. The city will introduce requirements to attract more trucks and trailers.

Cycling Action Plan

About 63,000 bicycles circulate in the center of Stockholm every day, an increase of 66% in ten years. By 2030, cycling is expected to account for 15% of rush-hour travel. However, the cycling strategy’s success depends on the broader strategy’s success.

In short, congestion pricing, accessible bikes, and cycling infrastructure, not to mention broader public transport systems, can support cycling.
