Scooter Racing: Basic Track Riding Techniques
Become a scooter racing ace by mastering these critical basic track riding techniques.
Scooter racing has recently become the most entertaining, eco-friendly speed sport. It also served as an avenue for e-scooter enthusiasts to test the limits of their rides without worrying about the usual restrictions like speed limits.
Below are essential tips to achieve maximum speed with your electric scooter without losing control.
Manage Your Vision
Look as far ahead as possible so you can maximize the parts of the track in your field of view. Given how fast you are going, it is pointless to mind things 10 feet away from you. By the time you spot an obstacle 20 feet away, you’ll have passed it by the time you decide. Moreover, if you focus 20 feet ahead or less, you might get overwhelmed by the flood of visual input. Avoid using your central vision and focus on your peripheral vision instead. Concentrate as far out as the horizon without taking your eyes off the course.
Avoid Target Fixation
Choosing the right things to ignore is as important as selecting the right ones to focus on. You should only latch your vision to things you can use as markers to help you navigate the course without losing speed. Do not get fixated on things that are outside the course. One of the most common scooter racing mistakes is focusing your view past the edge of the track or another rider. Scan things slowly from the right side of the course to the left.
Establish Braking Markers
Braking is essential when turning so you don’t crash your electric scooter into the track barrier. Decelerating and accelerating at the right time is the key to minimizing the loss of speed when turning. To do so, you need to make two markers: when to brake and release the brake to accelerate. Lighten the burden by focusing only on brake release markers. With enough experience, knowing when to stop braking automatically tells you where you should start braking.
Ride Smoothly and Predictably
Visualize a line that allows you to ride without needlessly swerving to the left or right. This will cut your lap time while making it easier for other riders to avoid you, minimizing the odds of an accident. Do not brake out of nowhere, even if you discover you’ve entered the wrong lane.
