Welcome to the next generation of commuting.

Spring is right around the corner, the favorite season of electric scooter riders. Although spring temperatures are moderate, preparing for sudden heat waves is better. Thanks to man-made climate change and global warming, weather has become increasingly unpredictable. North America experienced both unprecedented warm temperatures and record frigid temperatures this winter.

Below are the things you should consider for cases when riding in hot weather this coming spring.

Battery Life and E-scooter Range

Most electric scooters use a lithium-ion battery, which offers the best output-to-weight ratio. Extreme temperatures can damage lithium-ion cells. Moreover, their overall performance degrades when it is too hot or cold. Thus, when riding under the scorching sun, assume that your e-scooter can only deliver 80% of its normal maximum range to ensure it doesn’t run out of juice before it takes you home. Fortunately, newer models have advanced Battery Management Systems (BMS) that make it easy to monitor charge levels.

In addition, you can upgrade your controller to the Flash Motors Nano Elite to equip your ride with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. Nano Elite will factor in the temperature and other conditions to estimate your charge usage and alert you when it is time to head home.

Motor Efficiency and Overheating Risks

Riding in hot weather accelerates temperature buildup in your motor, which may lead to overheating. An overheated motor will have reduced speed and power. More importantly, riding with an overheated motor can cause permanent damage not only to the motor but also to the battery. Minimize the risks by including more shaded paths in your route and taking regular breaks to give the motor time to cool down.

Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion

High temperatures increase energy consumption, accelerating exhaustion and thirst. Bring a water container and rehydrate regularly. You can install a scooter basket or pouch in your PEV to make carrying items easier. Electrolyte-rich beverages will be better than ordinary water in replenishing the nutrients you’ve lost through sweat.

UV Protection and Sunburn

Direct sunlight can damage your skin, especially in the afternoon. Prevent sunburn by wearing sunscreen. Sunglasses will protect your eyes and vision. You can also wear long sleeves and long pants for extra protection.

There we go, four critical things to consider when riding in warm weather. Remember them and have fun with your electric scooter.
